I will give an overview of the history of diffuse cosmic gas after it is heated and ionized by reionization. I'll discuss (1) the simple rules that shape cosmic gas' thermal history, (2) how it relaxes from a clumpy state to something more uniform, and (3) how ionizing backgrounds affect it.
